Final exhibition in Helsinki

None
The final exhibition of Fotorally was in Akkuna gallery in Lasipalatsi from March 22nd
to April 3rd. The exhibition consisted of three different sections: in window there was a 55'' tv, where a wide range of pictures under different themes were rolling 24/7 (like "parties", "similarities"...with explaining texts). On two walls was a net of pictures, starting with one picture, and spreading freely to every dimensions - together there were about 50 pictures. Then there was also couple of photo collections gathered from elderly homes in Helsinki. There were about hundred visitors in the gallery during the exhibition. At least Helsingin Sanomat and Matkaopas-magazine wrote about the exhibition.

Fotorally network of photos

None
Fotorally is based on photos donated by the contributors and links they have made between photos. Every photo has at least one link, so their connections form a network. Links are based on users personal connotation and therefore the network is not symmetrical. Some photos have more links than others, but each photo is still connected to all others.
Currently the number of photos is nearing 2000 and the network of links is getting quite complicated -- it is starting to form organic shapes. The network is starting to look like a map!
Here http://www.fotorally.eu/net is an interactive tour of the photos and and their connections. You can move around the map and zoom into it (press down shift key).
We thank everyone who has taken part in the Fotorally so far.

Young and old mix in Fotorally

Secondary school students interview elderly people in a nursing home.
Recently secondary school students went to visit elderly people in an Amsterdam nursing home. They interviewed them about their family life in Amsterdam and together they selected pictures for Fotorally.

The photos were scanned by the Stadsarchief Amsterdam and returned to the owners. The students uploaded the scans in Fotorally and wrote captions for the photo’s based on the information they had gathered from the interviews. When everything was ready, the result was admired in a pleasant get-together. Also the coming months students will visit and interview elderly people.

Fotorally on tour

Minna Piirainen of Fotorally selecting photos in Vuorensyrjä retirement house with Vuokko Suomenranta, Kyllikki Ihalainen and Helvi Leino.
Fotorally was touring in winter 2009 local libraries around Helsinki. There was a two-weeks exhibition in each library and afterwards an infoday, where customers' photos were scanned.
During spring 2010 photos were collected in rest-homes and retirement houses. This has been a hit. One visit has brought even 50 photos of old Helsinki to Fotorally pages. Memories and lost cityscapes has been saved at the same time.
Touring in rest-homes continues in fall 2010.

Amsterdam Museumnight

None
On 7 November 2009 the annual Amsterdam Museumnight was organized with a total of 26000 visitors. 4000 visitors came to Stadsarchief Amsterdam (Amsterdam City Archives) where Flickr Group ‘Mokum’ presented a selection of their best photo’s throughout the building. Later that night musicbloggers played records of their own choice, commenting on this selection and on the choice of others.

On the ‘Bodenplein’ the new European website ‘Fotorally’ had its kick-off with a selection of photo’s from Amsterdam, Barcelona, Helsinki and Manchester on screen. Many visitors took a flyer home with the idea to link their own photo’s to the website. We hope of course that these promises will materialize in contributions to the website.

European Photo Album

Opening in Helsinki 1st of October 2009.

Fotorally is an international project to enhance the understanding of the European cultural diversity. The project initially run as a four city collaboration: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Helsinki and Manchester.

Fotorally presents itself as a “game of imagination”. Its goal is to create an online digital matrix of photographs taken by ordinary citizens throughout Europe, capturing the diversity of European cultures and ways of living – European Photo Album.

Anyone in the partner cities can take part in the game and Fotorally will be operated local cultural centers around Europe. Centers are a tool spanning different age groups, social classes and nationalities. Local culture centers reach those citizens who are perhaps not used to visiting the main cultural institutions. In addition, Fotorally pays special attention to elderly people, who still have photo albums and pictures of the ‘old days’ that can be scanned into the online album, thus conserving local cultural heritage.

When a photograph is added in the collection, participants in partner cities in various parts of Europe can submit a “reply” with a picture based on their association or idea from the same theme from their own local perspective. Viewers can then explore the similarities and differences of everyday life in different cultures and in different parts of Europe.

Fotorally

Fotorally connects European photo albums. Find a interesting photo, browse connected pictures and participate in Fotorally with your own photos.
